Are you fit enough for preseason…or destined to become part of The Breakfast Club?

Are you fit enough for preseason…or destined to become part of The Breakfast Club?

July 20, 2015 by Jenn Leave a Comment

We are in the home stretch of summer training. Very soon fall sport athletes will be packing their bags and making the trek either by car, bus or plane to their universities to join their teams for preseason.

Are you physically ready?

You should be following your summer training books religiously, and completing your fitness testing on time. Maybe you have been hitting your required run times – that is excellent! now imagine yourself doing that in 100% humidity. Run it again in long sleeves.

Think you are ready to compete? Maybe you are already sore from playing this summer, for the provincial team, club or other training centre? Now add another 2 hours of training to your daily schedule…every day…until you leave.  Then you might be getting close to ready for preseason

Have you been honest with yourself, and your coaching staff about how ready you are to compete? If you are on scholarship, know your coaches are expecting you to show up ready to compete at 300% Every. Single. Day. There is no sugar coating their expectations, you are about to start the hardest, most intense, mentally and physically exhausting journey of your life! Your coaches will be there to support you, but there is no joking around. If you are not fit and ready to perform you will NOT play! Simple as that!

Check out what former Missouri State and Duke Field Hockey athletes Liz Miyashita and Marian Dickinson had to say about preparing for preseason and explaining the dreaded Breakfast Club!

Still think you’re ready?

Grab a friend, teammate or coach and run those tests again!

And if you need a bit of a training break – try something fun and different for a refreshing yet still challenging break!

Here are some ideas:

Hiking; Check out Access Sport Staff here at the peak of Joffre Lakes!
Ocean Kayaking
Paddle boarding
Surfing
Golfing (even pitch and put with your friends!)
Do an adventure race (Tough Mudder, Mudderella, Spartan Race, Colour Run ANYTHING!)
Yoga in the park
Slack lining at the beach!
Pick up basketball at the park
Beach Volleyball

What is your favourite summer cross training activity?
