The following summary was compiled from information available in the NCAA’s Guide for the College Bound Student Athlete (which you can view HERE ) And from the ncaa’s 2point3.org website on academic eligibility.

In order to play Division I sports, you need to qualify academically. Which means freshmen student athletes must have:
- Graduated from high school
- Completed 16 Core Courses, including 10 before your seventh semester
- Earned a minimum 2.300 Grade-Point Average in core courses to compete in your first year of college
- Earned a combined SAT or ACT score that matches your core-course GPA on the sliding scale.
CORE COURSES – YOU MUST HAVE 16 OF THEM:
- Ten of your core courses must be completed prior to the seventh semester (grade 12 fall). Those ten courses are “locked in” and can’t be retaken to improve the grade-point average.
- Seven of those 10 must be a combination of English, math or natural or physical science that fulfills the overall distribution requirements listed below.
- If you don’t earn 10 courses before your seventh semester, you are still eligible to practice and receive a scholarship, but you can’t compete.
- For a complete list of your the NCAA core courses applicable to your high school or province, visit www.eligibilitycenter.org. NOTE: Canadian high schools are not listed individually. You must search for your province, and then select the option with the city of Indianapolis. For example “British Columbia Schools, Indianapolis BC”
DIVISION I CORE COURSE REQUIREMENTS
- 4 years of English.
- 3 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher).
- 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab if offered by high school).
- 1 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical science.
- 2 years of social science.
- 4 years of additional courses (from any area above, foreign language or comparative religion/philosophy).
DIVISION II: You are required to complete 14 Core courses in the following areas.
- 3 years of English
- 2 years of mathematics (Algebra I or higher)
- 2 years of natural/physical science (1 year of lab if it’s offered by your high school)
- 2 year of additional English, mathematics or natural/physical sciences
- 2 years of social science
- 3 years of additional courses (from any area above, as well as foreign language or non doctrinal religion/philosophy)
GRADE POINT AVERAGE:
Beginning August 1, 2016, you must earn at least a 2.300 GPA in NCAA core courses to be eligible to compete in your first year of college. You can use our GPA Calculator to translate your percentage grades into a NCAA friendly GPA.
To get a scholarship and practice, you must earn at least a 2.000 GPA in NCAA core courses.
Only courses that appear on your high school’s list of NCAA courses will be used to calculate your GPA for NCAA eligibility purposes. (this means no, you can’t use elective courses such as art, drama, music, PE etc)
Division I uses a sliding scale to match test scores and core GPAs. You must earn a combined SAT or ACT score that matches your core-course GPA on the sliding scale.
NOTE: The NCAA has also introduced a new status for the class of 2016 – the “Academic Redshirt.” Students with a core course GPA between 2.00 and 2.299 are ineligible for “Full Qualifier” status but may achieve Academic Redshirt status by meeting minimum sliding scale test score requirements. An Academic Redshirt may receive a scholarship and practice with their team, but may not participate in game competition as a college freshman.

Test Scores
The NCAA uses only the critical reading and math SAT scores to determine eligibility. The writing score is not used.
The NCAA uses only the sum of English, math, reading and science ACT scores to determine eligibility.
For example
Verbal | Math | Total | |
SAT #1 | 350 | 570 | 920 |
SAT #2 | 620 | 440 | 1060 |
Scores Used | 620 | 570 | 1190 |
note: this is only for NCAA eligibility. Refer to school entrance requirements for individual admissions standards.
When you take the exam, you are able to identify up to four universities, scholarship programs or organizations to send your score report to. Use the code 9999 to make sure your scores get reported directly to the Eligibility Centre. There will be a fee to have this sent after the exam if you forget to do this.

All athletes must register with the NCAA Eligibility Centre. To do this you must register, and submit transcripts, test scores, and verification of your amateurism. This entire process will cost $95 USD
When you apply you will need to submit high school transcripts for grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 showing that you have completed all of the 16 core courses required. (NOTE: Many Canadian transcripts only show grades 10 – 12 so you will have to specifically request that grade 9 transcripts are included)
