Taking that first leap in to the world of recruiting is confusing, scary, overwhelming.
There is a lot of space for Self Doubt.
There is a lot of room to underestimate yourself, your skill, your goals.
There is a lot of opportunity to take the easy route, and to stay safe; within your comfort zone.
Well, I’d like to tell you NO! STOP THAT!
Magic happens outside of your comfort zone! Don’t limit yourself!
There is absolutely NO WAY for you to know what every coach is looking for in a recruit. And every coach, every program, every school is looking for something slightly different. Each coach is looking for a personality, and athlete of character that will fit well within their program. Coaches don’t simply recruit the very best talent, they are looking for someone that will slide into their team culture and make a positive impact on the field, in the locker room, and in the classroom. They are looking for leaders, role models and student athletes that are willing to work HARD to reach their goals.
So how do YOU know if you fit what a coach is looking for unless you introduce yourself to that coach, and let them know that you love their school, and are interested in being a part of their program?
Now is the part where I introduce myself! Jenn Beagan, I’m the owner of Access Sport and I’ve been mentoring athletes and families through the recruiting process for years now. I will be speaking at seminar about TWO very important aspects of recruiting. The first is how to successfully START your recruiting experience, and the second is how to best prepare yourself mentally and physically for varsity athletics.
I like to break STARTING SUCCESSFULLY into three steps:
The first steps isn’t necessarily about figuring out who you think might come to see you play. It is about identifying where you, as a student-athlete will be happy going to school, not every school is for every person! For this we will look at geographic, academic and athletic requirements and really just make a target list of what you would want in your DREAM OPPORTUNITY!
The second step is to determine what makes YOU a top recruit. Why should coaches recruit you? I will talk a bit about how to present yourself to coaches, what information to share and how to share it, and using your online profile to it’s maximum potential.
The last step to jump starting your recruiting journey is to just go for it and send out emails to these coaches. Make the first contact and then let THEM make the determination whether or not they will peruse you as a recruit. One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is taking this decision out of the coaches hands by underestimating themselves. You never know unless you try!
I’ll touch briefly on recruiting regulations that you should be familiar with, as well as he popular subject of athletic scholarships before moving on to the second part of the talk which will focus on identifying a few things that you can do NOW to prepare yourself for the level of physicality, emotional strain, and academic stress that is varsity athletics.
I’m really excited to bring this seminar, and showcase opportunity to the field hockey community in Vancouver! I look forward to seeing you all there!
